Cosplay Competition for Geek Week + other things

The Hive Student Union, in conjunction with clubs all over UWS are organising a "geek week", filled with activities and stalls etc.
For us, we may also get a stall for more promotion and participate in a cosplay competition.
I know it's a bit iffy, associating our interest in anime and manga as "geeky" but I'm just putting up this idea across on behalf of Heidi from the Hive who helped us get to SMASH!
So far there has been no date written and I have limited information about this...
All I know is that there is going to be a cosplay competition within the anime clubs in UWS- us vs our "rival" JAUWS for a cash prize of $200.
I also heard that the Hive are also getting runner-up prizes too.
And we can show special screenings of anime movies on that week/day.
I guess we have nothing to lose if we try this out ^.^"

Sounds great! Although I lack the ability to make my own costume, I will definitely cosplay somehow... help! =p

As for cosplay soccer, it's going to be a bit rough considering you could eventually wreck your costume out on the field, unless people cosplay as sports characters haha. That said, I wouldn't mind helping out!

I probably won't worry about tone - is is that important? (Like if I do wind up finding someone and they've got fair skin, but I don't.)

-.- Urgh this is like the last time I am going to ask my mum to help out with my cosplay. >.> She loves just saying things and not going with the idea. She tried to get me to ask my aunt to make it for me after boasting she knew how to sew clothes...-.- but I want to learn how to use the sewing machine. >.<
I am determined to make my Tachibana Kanade cosplay! - well my aunt is making the skirt.

What about casual cosplay? Is that okay? 'Cause if it is, I might be able to do something like that. I don't have the skills to sew an outfit or the money to buy one, but I could buy a wig - either locally, or my friend says you can get good ones at Paddy's Market.

Yes you can get a good wig at Paddy's Markets! Haggle and you can get a long-ish wig for $30!
I can't help you with making clothes either since my mum is a bitch and actually doesn't really know what she is talking about when it comes to sewing. -.-
Maybe you can go to the Asian fabric shops somewhere and buy material from there- beats Spotlight and Lincraft prices...

@Suigintou - That's why I was thinking of just doing a casual thing. I can get a wig to suit whoever I'd like to go as then just find something from my cupboard that I think would suit that character.

note to wigs at patty : HAGGLE YOUR PRICE DOWN WELL!.. seriously - they rip you off really hard..
If they wont lower the price to a decent price.. check the wig if its worth the price..
most of the time they will sell an average grade wig which tends to require really good care .. and even get tangled in windy or harsh weather.. so becareful..
don't get fooled by the feeling of wigs -> they use a serum when brushing to make it feel nice, smooth and silky so it looks like its good quality fibre
Also, check inside the wig if the lining is done well and intact, if the adjustable clips looks like they're gonna fall off or not .. AND check if they FIT YOUR HEAD.
Overall -> their wigs arent bad but its good to check and make sure =) [has only bought wigs there once/twice]

for costume -> if you're not good at sewing, go for an approach with cheap clothings and alter them..
School uniform skirt -> go for your school uniform or something that wont cos alot.
Blazers with outlines like vamprie knight OR code geass -> smart approach what vincent does - use tape or electric tapes to line them.
The possibilities to create an outfit is endless.. well almost

im not sure how this cosplay competition works because personally, i'd say going for a casual approach but in character (so wig and makeup or whatever) is absolutely fine. My only concern is the chance of winning the cosplay comp is low because most likely (like every casual comp >_>") they go for something that stands out and appealing and make them go "WOW" which i really think is unfair.
They should judge on the accuracy and how you be in character =)

... i feel like.. cosplaying in a k-on group.. sncie it seeeeeeems easy..(the school uniform)
but ofcourse there isnt enough people and blah......

@Dannieh - The other problem besides sewing is money. I already owe myself about $700 dollars. I've been spending my book money for the next two years.

I'm not so fussed about the comp. It's just having fun, I think.

But I could think of altering an outfit.

I don't think there's a series that has the same kind of skirt as my school did. And even if it did - I don't even know if I have it anymore, and if I do, if it fits me.

I could look at the list of anime I've watched and maybe find an episode where the characters wear an outfit that isn't complex.

Actually - maybe people can help give me ideas. I'm not going to worry so much about eye colour and skin tone. There aren't many tanned anime characters so it makes it a bit harder.

It has to be something that I can wear on the train, so nothing too outrageous. Like - I'd be happy with a uniform style thing. Or something just casual. Either that or something that can be changed into easily.

And something that can be easily fixed with what I might have lying around the house.
