In 1969, young boys Kenji, Otcho, Yoshitsune and Maruo build, in an empty field, a hideout they call their secret base, in which they and their friends can get together to share manga, stories, stolen porn magazines and listen to the radio. To celebrate the event, a member draws a symbol for the base that would represent their friendship. After their friends Yukiji and Donkey join the gang, they imagine a future scenario where villains would try to destroy the world, and in which the boys would stand up and fight against this evil.

The series itself opens in the late 1990s, where Kenji is a convenience store owner, finding solace in his childhood adventures as he takes care of his baby niece Kanna and his mother. After Donkey is reported to have committed suicide, Kenji stumbles upon a large cult led by a man known only as "Friend". The cult has a plan to destroy the world on New Year's Eve of 2000, and the events that are currently unfolding are suspiciously close to the scenario Kenji and his friends thought up in their secret base when they were kids. Kenji begins to recruit some of his older friends, including Otcho and Yoshitsune, in an attempt to stop "Friend".

Naoki Urasawa is a god. I am really in love with his manga as it is the best thing I have ever read. It is thrilling and constantly throws you off the edge of your seat with suspense as more and more questions are being answered.

Oh but don't take Wikipedia's word for it.

Hahaha Vivi I didn't think you'd actually "quote" me. Looks like I definitely have to read it now, otherwise that quote won't make any sense.

After reading that short synopsis of this manga that you've provided, and the fact that both you and Alex are describing the artist as godly, I think this is well worth a shot! Heck, I barely read manga these days so it would be interesting to get back into reading some good ol' black and white pages. =)

Hmm I'm too lazy to read 20th century boys (too much filler) and I don't like the art style, however I DO suggest that people watch the live-action movie which I think summarises the entire manga minus the filler-material
